It’s a good way to expose yourself to a wide variety of people. If you keep an open mind and a will to become your best self, you can learn to not just deal with any kind of person, but learn how to harness the affect you have on a person and change the outcome of any interaction.

Head Barista Trainer and Shift Supervisor
September 2018 - August 2019 • Westlake, OH
What I liked
I learned a lot about how to manage a large team of people from both a training and a daily operations viewpoint. I learned how to evaluate employees in order to help them build on their personal growth, encourage team building, and provide emotional support to others.
What I wish was different
The job was really emotionally demanding. I felt all the time that there was pressure from Starbucks culture-building within the company that I had to adhere to a certain standard of attitude, which can be very draining to some people. Sometimes I failed to address this properly within myself and a lot of times I had to help other people hold themselves accountable for speaking up when they needed some support.
Advice
Look for positions that will help you develop skills as well as provide experience for your career path. I am a film major but working as a supervisor and training people for a company that has such a strong history of identity and culture taught me a lot of skills I can take into directing and producing.

What I liked
I like working with a team who will support and appreciate me, teaching me as I grow into the company. I also enjoy making customer connections with usual customers and making their experience great.
What I wish was different
I would want to train longer because there's a lot of stuff to learn. After training for a week and a half, they put you on the floor right away.
Advice
Make sure you try your best. The work is fast paced and it may take a while to get better, but as long as you communicate that you need help, you'll have a better experience.

What I liked
I loved learning how to make all the drinks and seeing regulars every morning. It felt good to know people’s orders and smile and just have a genuine conversation with them.
What I wish was different
Sometimes the schedules would be a little bit disorganized which would throw me off but it wasn’t too bad over the summer.
Advice
Be kind and just relax. You will be able to focus and do your job well if your mind isn’t frantic. If you communicate with your customers kindly, they will almost always understand.
