I like working with coffee, my coworkers are amazing people, and the job is fast paced so time goes really fast.
What I wish was different
The job can be extra stressful when the company cuts back on labor. This job is also very exhausting physically, mentally, and emotionally from being in customer service.
Advice
Remember that at the end of the day, it's just coffee.

July 2011 • Lexington, KY
What I liked
I enjoy the fast-paced, multitasking nature of the work. I like making drinks and being busy and I enjoy when I run the floor and can shift my employees in a way that promotes positive work environment.
What I wish was different
The labor allowance at Starbucks is very lean, which doesn't allow for call-outs, unexpectedly high volume, or any sort of variance from the projected sales experience.
Advice
I think a lot of people think that working in a coffee shop is going to be an easy laid-back job, but depending on where you are located that is probably not going to be true. No individual task is incredibly difficult to master with training, but you will be performing it under high pressure and high volume, and you will be moving constantly. It is more physically demanding than you are probably thinking. Be prepared for that.

What I liked
There both is and was a large sense of community with the other partners. People were easy to learn to work with as a cohesive unit.
What I wish was different
I wish my current manager would take into account availability more than he currently does.
Advice
If you have the ability to work at Starbucks for at least a little while, I highly encourage it. It is important to learn the teamwork skills and customer service skills it provides as well as gives someone an insight on the true behind the scenes of retail and customer service.

the staff, the pay, my manager, the actual barista work
What I wish was different
better training, more balanced time between being on bar and register
Advice
ask questions! if your'e unsure about anything especially how to make drinks you should ask, no one cares if you don't know and everyone tries to be helpful. Also customers don't always know what they're talking about/want so be patient and don't feel bad if you end up dealing with negative attitudes from them.
