What I liked

I liked the teamwork on the job, as well as the fast-paced environment. Once I developed a rhythm, I could do my job very efficiently. I also enjoyed the opportunity to interact with people and be creative.

What I wish was different

I wish I would not have had so many early shifts. It was difficult for me to work before the sun rose and still have energy the rest of the day.

Advice

I would recommend establishing certain hours of availability for yourself and sharing them with your manager. It is also important to communicate effectively with coworkers, and have a positive attitude at work.

Shift Supervisor

July 2011 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

I enjoy the fast-paced, multitasking nature of the work. I like making drinks and being busy and I enjoy when I run the floor and can shift my employees in a way that promotes positive work environment.

What I wish was different

The labor allowance at Starbucks is very lean, which doesn't allow for call-outs, unexpectedly high volume, or any sort of variance from the projected sales experience.

Advice

I think a lot of people think that working in a coffee shop is going to be an easy laid-back job, but depending on where you are located that is probably not going to be true. No individual task is incredibly difficult to master with training, but you will be performing it under high pressure and high volume, and you will be moving constantly. It is more physically demanding than you are probably thinking. Be prepared for that.

I loved the employees that I worked with. Our bar support lady is the best!

What I wish was different

Scheduling seemed off sometimes. At times we were very understaffed, but other times we were definitely over staffed.

Advice

Don't let the number of drinks in line discourage you! Just try your hardest to keep up and make each drink as fast and well as possible!
