Sea Kayaking Instructor/ Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Orcas, WA

What I liked

Working with Camp Orkila was great because it was a very supportive environment, but also pushed me to excel. I learned a lot about kayaking, but also gained experience leading high school-age campers and how to be a supportive presence in someone's life. The camp is located in a beautiful corner of the world that I wish more people could experience!

What I wish was different

A bit more direction in how to balance time off and time at work, which can be difficult for some people to learn without help (like me).

Advice

Be open to learning, even if you have prior experience, because this environment is designed to constantly improve your skill set. You can gain a lot by watching and listening to the other workers who know a lot about how to best support the campers.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Eastsound, WA

What I liked

The atmosphere and interactions between coworkers is very positive, and it was super amazing to work with so many kids.

What I wish was different

Would have liked higher or hourly pay, as the job is classified "exempt" and technically makes less than minimum wage.

Advice

It's important to rely on teammates a lot in this job. Working with so many kids can be draining if taken on alone.
