Communications and Marketing Intern

May - September 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I loved interning at WMEAC! I was in a specific area (communications and marketing), but there are so many opportunities to branch out into other parts of the organization to meet your learning goals for the internship. They have a huge range of internships from policy to eco-journalism, which also means you'll be connected to a ton of other passionate interns. It was a really cool way to see how my strengths and knowledge can be used in unique ways in the sustainability field.

What I wish was different

The pay could have been better (one $500 stipend). However, they were very up front in the interview that they don't pay enough, but they make up for it in experiences etc.. I really do believe they lived up to that promise.

Advice

Take advantage of all the opportunities they have to offer! Step out of your comfort zone! Be honest about your goals, and your supervisors will help you achieve them.

Eco-journalism intern

May - September 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

Working for a great cause (local environmental issues). I also liked the relaxed, yet professional atmosphere of the facility. We could dress a bit more casually, yet still hold a level of poise.

What I wish was different

Better pay and more hours. I think I would have liked writing articles for them more as a full-time intern.

Advice

If you're used to writing for a school paper, this experience is at a much slower pace. Articles aren't published as quickly. The staff here is small, so there isn't a content editor to check through your work. It's very much independent.
