McNair Scholars Summer Internship

August 2019 • Adrian, MI

What I liked

The McNair Program is an intensive learning opportunity and because of that it pushed me past boundaries I didn't even know I had. The people within my cohort were all driven and had such a wide variety of interests so I was able to learn more than what they taught in the classroom. Not only did the program teach me more about how to create my own research, but, they provided me the opportunity to attend a conference in Kansas City where I could see where my efforts, both within and outside the internship, could lead me.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been given more time to prepare for the internship. Those attending needed to come up with a research topic and finish a research proposal in two weeks. I felt that the timing of everything vs. the work load was a bit difficult to manage.

Advice

Take the time to thoroughly think through your research topic beforehand. If you start the internship with something strong in mind then the rest of the process will be much more fluid and straightforward.
