Department: Student Wellness Center 

Supervisor(s): Wellness & Health Promotion Staff 

Pay Rate: $18.95 per hour

Work Hours: Average of 10 - 12 hours per week

Anticipated Start Date: August 18, 2025

 

Job Description 

Peer Health Educators (PHEs) are specially-trained student assistants who help their peers build knowledge and skills through interactive events and activities, workshops, and digital media. PHEs focus primarily on topics related to alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, healthy sexuality (e.g. safer sex, consent, healthy relationships), and mental health. Other duties include: assisting with the delivery of Wellness Lounge services, promoting and staffing Student Wellness Center events, and participating in outreach activities. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the development and implementation of health education initiatives including synchronous programs, digital content, and outreach efforts
  • Facilitate workshops for classes and student groups
  • Staff the Wellness Lounge, providing a high level of customer service to students utilizing services such as the massage chairs, Condom Co-Op, and Narcan/Test Strips Distribution. 
  • Actively participate in assigned training, meetings, and group work with other student assistants 
  • Work professionally and collaboratively with other students, professional staff, and campus partners  
  • Communicate regularly with supervisors and attend periodic check in meetings                                                      
  • Other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Continuing SJSU student enrolled in classes at least half-time 
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher and in good disciplinary standing 
  • Eligible and committed to work for the full 2025 - 2026 academic year 
  • Able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week throughout the academic year
    • Work hours are typically scheduled Monday through Friday between 8:00am - 5:00pm with occasional evening hours
    • Work is primarily based in the Student Wellness Center and/or on the SJSU campus 
    • Must be available to participate in weekly staff meetings/group work on Fridays (TBD between 9:00am - 12:00pm) 
  • Available to participate in PHE Training Retreats
    • Fall 2025 Training tentatively scheduled for August 18 & August 19
    • Spring 2026 Training tentatively scheduled for January 20 & January 21
  • Able to adhere to laws and regulations unique to a health environment related to confidentiality (HIPAA, Title IX, etc.) 
  • Willing to apply the principles of harm reduction, including acting as a nonjudgmental resource and integrating social justice practices into daily work 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Knowledge and experience related to at least one of the primary health topics (alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, healthy sexuality, mental health)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a customer service orientation
  • Willing to work independently and as part of a cohesive team 
  • Able to work on multiple projects and prioritize tasks in order to meet established deadlines
