University of Pittsburgh

Undergraduate research assistant

April 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

Wonderful experience working along side and under the instruction of postdoctoral students at a behavioral Neuroscience research lab. Learned many techniques I never thought I would be able to learn this early in my career!

What I wish was different

Only thing I wish was different is the amount of work--that I had more to do! Great experience all around

Advice

Explore as many internship options as you can, and once you find one that is actually relevant to you and your career, dive in and take the initiative to go beyond what's expected of you. It won't go unnoticed!

Research Assistant

June 2014 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I really like how my job is on campus. They are really flexible with my class schedule and are really appreciative of any help I can give. I especially liked how I got so much more experience than I ever would have in the classroom. I was able to help out and shadow physicians, nurses, physician assistants, surgeons, see cases in the OR and work in the clinic.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have spent more time with my internship, because some of the lessons I learned here were much more valuable than for example public speaking class, Russian Fairy tales, or piano.

Advice

I recommend to all of my friends or other peers that they should get an internship somewhere to experience new things. Worst case scenario, you find something that you don't want to do, which still helps you in the future. It is better to find out earlier than later. I think the lessons and experience you gain in an internship are far more valuable than you will ever get in a classroom.
