Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

MSI Intern

June - August 2023 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to know the safety inspectors within the Office of Commercial Space Transportation, and I was able to learn a lot through trainings and involvement with the team.

What I wish was different

I was fully remote which made it difficult to communicate and connect with the rest of the team, so I do wish I had been in person or hybrid and able to meet and work more closely with my coworkers.

Advice

Be willing to take on more projects and tasks if you have the time and ability to do so, as it helped me to learn even more and made my work experience that much better.

I like the experiences in helping to defend and protect the safety of the skies and working with other technicians to understand and troubleshoot such systems used for safety.

What I wish was different

I sometimes wish there was more work to in the day-to-day

Advice

It'd be very helpful to already understand a lot about signals and some of the math behind it for systems like Communications and RADAR

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexibility of doing this internship remotely, If it weren't remote, I don't know if I would have earned this valuable opportunity.

As much as I loved this internship remotely, I also wish I could have visited local FAA facilities or had other opportunities to physically connect with other FAA employees or interns.

Advice

I am grateful for the connections I am gaining and knowledge I am able to gain and put forth in my studies.

Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I really loved how much all the managers and my coworkers were willing to help me out on a day-to-day basis! They also gave me a lot of trust in being able to do my task and weren't over my shoulder for everything. They also gave me many opportunities to do more work than I was originally assigned so I was always actively helping out the bigger goal.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked in a branch more relevant to my major (I am in Aerospace, and I worked in a Civil Engineering Department). They are great about getting you a position, but not always the best about matching major to job.

Advice

Ask for more work! (if you can handle it) Your manager will be grateful at how willing you are to take on more tasks and will bring you into bigger projects if you ask. Also, ask to do more things than just your job. I got to do lots of cool tours just by getting into contact with people outside of my branch.

IT Intern

June 2020 • Oklahoma City, OK

What I liked

Super nice managers. Flexible schedule. They supported me in branching out and pursuing new projects with my free time. Learned new database skills. Received diversity training.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the time was not very structured as in you have lots of free time, and there were a lot of meetings to attend but you've just got to learn to say no.

Advice

Go for it. I've never thought about working for a federal government but it turns out to be a pretty enjoyable easy job.
